Kuramathi Maldives – A Family-Friendly Paradise Revisited

When we first visited Kuramathi Maldives, it was just the two of us – wide-eyed parents-to-be on our babymoon, soaking up the sun, the spa, and the serenity. Fast forward a few years, and we’ve just returned from a magical second visit – this time with our 2.5-year-old son Teo. And guess what? Kuramathi didn’t just live up to our dreamy memories – it delivered a whole new kind of joy: the magic of seeing paradise through your toddler’s eyes.

DE: Jetzt, ein paar Jahre später, haben wir Kuramathi noch einmal besucht – diesmal mit unserem 2,5-jährigen Sohn Teo. Und ganz ehrlich? Kuramathi war nicht nur genauso schön wie in unserer Erinnerung – mit Kind war es eine ganz neue Art von Magie: Die Insel durch Kinderaugen zu erleben, hat alles noch besonderer gemacht.

Same Island, New Adventure

Returning to a resort you’ve loved is always a bit of a gamble – will it feel as special the second time around? But Kuramathi pulled it off effortlessly. This time, we experienced it not as a romantic escape, but as a family haven. And honestly? It might be even better with little ones.

DE: Gleiche Insel, neues Abenteuer

Wenn man einen Ort nochmal besucht, den man schon geliebt hat, ist immer ein bisschen Ungewissheit dabei: Wird es immer noch so toll sein? Aber Kuramathi hat uns sofort wieder abgeholt – diesmal nicht als romantischer Rückzugsort, sondern als richtiges Familienparadies. Und das hat uns total begeistert.

From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like we were returning home. The genuine warmth towards Teo – from the welcome at the jetty to the cheerful waves from the buggy drivers – made a huge difference. It's clear Kuramathi isn’t just kid-friendly – it’s kid-welcoming.

DE: Schon bei der Ankunft wurden wir wie alte Bekannte begrüßt. Das gesamte Team war super herzlich – besonders zu Teo. Von der Begrüßung am Jetty bis zu den winkenden Buggy-Fahrern: Man spürt sofort, dass Kinder hier nicht nur „geduldet“, sondern wirklich willkommen sind.

What Makes Kuramathi Perfect for Families?

1. Spacious Villas – Room to Breathe (and Play): We stayed in one of the resort’s Deluxe water villas, and the space was just what we needed. Having a villa with plenty of room (and a shaded deck!) gave us the flexibility to create a comfortable routine. There was space for Teo to move freely without us feeling cramped, and we could set up little zones for naps, playtime, and peaceful moments staring out at the ocean. And with direct access to the ocean, it was great for us to enjoy the water while Teo was napping inside. If you prefer direct access to a sandy beach, which is always great with small children, you could also opt for one of the beach villas.

DE: Warum Kuramathi perfekt für Familien ist

1. Geräumige Villen – Platz zum Atmen (und Spielen): Wir haben diesmal in einer der Deluxe Water Villas übernachtet – und der Platz war genau das, was wir als Familie brauchten. Die Villa war groß genug, dass wir uns nicht auf die Füße getreten sind und uns kleine „Zonen“ einrichten konnten: zum Spielen, zum Mittagsschlaf und zum gemütlich-draußen-Sitzen mit Meerblick. Die schattige Terrasse war Gold wert, besonders wenn Teo ein Nickerchen gemacht hat und wir trotzdem mal kurz ins Wasser hüpfen konnten. Wer lieber direkten Zugang zum Sandstrand hat (was mit Kleinkind super praktisch ist), für den sind die Beach Villen ideal.

2. Kids Club & Play Spaces – Something for Every Age:Although Teo was a bit young for the full Kids Club experience (which starts at age 3), we spent a few hours a day with him there and were thoroughly impressed. The facilities were bright, clean, and full of engaging activities for older children – from arts and crafts to outdoor games. We also made use of the babysitting service for children aged 0-3 and got some much needed couple time. Babysitting services start at 15 USD / hour and they even offer in-villa babysitting. Such a gamechanger! They also offer lunchtime for the kids. Bageecha Kids club really is a state of the art kids club.

For younger kids, the island itself offers enough natural exploration to keep them entertained. Little jungle paths, sandy stretches, and calm beach corners meant Teo had new things to discover every day. For families with more than one child, or older kids, the Bageecha Kids Club would be a fantastic way to balance family time with a bit of independence.

DE: 5. Kids Club & Spielmöglichkeiten – für jedes Alter was dabei:Auch wenn Teo mit 2,5 Jahren noch ein bisschen zu jung für das volle Kids-Club-Programm (ab 3 Jahre) war, haben wir uns den Bageecha Kids Club natürlich angeschaut – und waren echt begeistert! Helle Räume, sauber, kreativ eingerichtet – ein Traum für Kinder. Und: Es gibt sogar einen Babysitter-Service für Kinder unter 3 Jahren. Wir haben ihn genutzt und konnten mal ein bisschen Paarzeit genießen. Die Betreuung kostet ab 15 USD pro Stunde und wird auch direkt in der Villa angeboten – richtig genial! Sie bieten sogar Mittagessen für die Kinder an. Der Bageecha Club ist wirklich einer der besten, die wir je gesehen haben.

Für die ganz Kleinen wie Teo ist aber auch die Insel selbst ein riesiger Abenteuerspielplatz: kleine Dschungelpfade, ruhige Strände, spannende Ecken zum Entdecken – es gab jeden Tag etwas Neues zu sehen. Und für Familien mit mehreren oder älteren Kindern ist der Kids Club ein super Weg, um Familienzeit mit etwas Unabhängigkeit zu kombinieren.

3. The Buggies:Kuramathi is a fairly large island by Maldivian standards, and the buggies that run every few minutes make getting around a breeze. For Teo, the buggies were the highlight. He treated every ride like a mini adventure. For us, it meant stress-free travel to dinner or the dive center without hauling a tired toddler in the heat. It’s such a small thing, but it made a huge difference. But we also loved the possibility to take an evening walk to dinner or back to our villa. The island is quite stroller friendly.

DE: 3. Die Buggys: Kuramathi ist für maledivische Verhältnisse eine recht große Insel – aber dank der kleinen Elektro-Buggys, die regelmäßig fahren, kommt man easy überall hin. Für Teo waren die Buggys das absolute Highlight. Jede Fahrt war für ihn ein Abenteuer. Für uns bedeutete es: entspannt zum Abendessen oder zum Tauchzentrum ohne verschwitztes Kind auf dem Arm. So simpel – aber so wertvoll! Und wer lieber zu Fuß geht: Die Insel ist richtig gut mit dem Kinderwagen begehbar. Abendliche Spaziergänge zum Restaurant oder zurück zur Villa waren bei uns fast schon Ritual.

4. Flexible Dining – Happy Bellies All Around: One of the biggest challenges when traveling with kids is food – but Kuramathi made it easy. The buffet restaurants offered a wide selection that catered to all tastes and ages. There were fresh fruits, pastas, curries, bread, veggies, and more – meaning Teo could eat well without us having to compromise. Staff were super accommodating, offering to bring food quickly when we had a restless little diner. And for us parents, the à la carte restaurants offered delicious options when we wanted something a bit more special. A feature that I loved a lot was that there was a free kids menu available 24/7 at the island coffee shop. So in case your little one gets hungry before the buffet opens, The Island Grill has you covered. Another hit was the homemade icecream at Palm which was a daily mandatory stop for us.

DE: 4. Flexibles Essen – glückliche Bäuche für alle:

Essen mit Kind kann auf Reisen manchmal anstrengend sein – aber auf Kuramathi war’s total entspannt. Die Buffets hatten eine riesige Auswahl für jeden Geschmack und jedes Alter: frisches Obst, Pasta, Currys, Brot, Gemüse… Teo hat immer was gefunden, das ihm geschmeckt hat. Das Personal war super aufmerksam und hat uns auch mal schnell was gebracht, wenn Teo ungeduldig wurde. Für uns Eltern waren die À-la-carte-Restaurants ein kleines Extra-Highlight. Richtig cool fanden wir auch das kostenlose Kinder-Menü im Island Coffee Shop – rund um die Uhr verfügbar! Perfekt, wenn die kleinen hungrig sind, bevor das Buffet öffnet. Und: Das selbstgemachte Eis im Palm war bei uns ein täglicher Stopp

5. Shaded Beaches & Shallow Lagoons – Built for Toddlers: Kuramathi’s beaches are stunning – soft white sand, calm waters, and palm tree shade that’s perfect for mid-morning play without the harsh sun. We found several spots where the lagoon was shallow and gentle, which meant Teo could wade in safely while we kept a watchful (but relaxed) eye on him. These areas were great for sandcastle building, coral spotting, and just letting Teo roam free with a bucket and spade. And when it got too hot, we simply headed back to our shaded villa deck for a snack and cool-down.

DE: 5. Schattige Strände & seichte Lagunen – wie gemacht für Kleinkinder:

Die Strände auf Kuramathi sind einfach traumhaft: puderweicher Sand, ruhiges Wasser und Palmen, die angenehmen Schatten spenden – perfekt für den Vormittag am Meer, ohne in der prallen Sonne zu brutzeln. Wir haben mehrere Stellen gefunden, wo die Lagune flach und ganz ruhig war – Teo konnte da sicher plantschen, während wir ganz entspannt in der Nähe geblieben sind. Da wurde gebuddelt, Korallen bestaunt und mit dem Eimer durch den Sand gezogen. Und wenn’s zu heiß wurde, ging’s einfach zurück auf unsere schattige Terrasse für eine kleine Snack- oder Siesta-Pause.

Moments That Melted Our Hearts

Although this was Teo's 3rd time in the Maldives, he was much more aware of his surroundings this time around. He loved watching the fish from our deck and was fascinated by the birds and crabs wandering around the island. These are the little moments that make family travel feel so special – and Kuramathi offers them in abundance.

Evenings were spent strolling the islands sandbank, catching the pink hues of sunset, and listening to the gentle crash of waves. No screen time, no rush, just us. Kuramathi has this way of slowing time down – even with a toddler in tow.

DE: Herzensmomente

Auch wenn es Teos dritter Malediven-Trip war – diesmal hat er alles viel bewusster wahrgenommen. Er saß oft auf der Terrasse und hat die Fische beobachtet, war total fasziniert von den Vögeln und kleinen Krabben auf der Insel. Genau diese kleinen Momente machen das Reisen mit Kind so besonders – und davon bietet Kuramathi echt jede Menge.

Abends sind wir meistens über die Sandbank spaziert, haben den Sonnenuntergang angeschaut und den Wellen gelauscht. Kein Handy, kein Stress – einfach nur wir. Kuramathi hat so eine besondere Energie, die alles langsamer und entspannter macht. Sogar mit Kleinkind.

Final Thoughts – Would We Recommend Kuramathi for Families?

Absolutely. Whether it’s your first family holiday or you're seasoned pros with little ones, Kuramathi strikes that rare balance between luxury and comfort. It’s relaxed without being chaotic, refined without being rigid. And most importantly, it allows families to connect – with each other, with nature, and with a slower pace of life.

We’ll always cherish our babymoon memories here – but now, Kuramathi has gifted us something even more precious: the sound of Teo giggling in the shallows, pointing at fish, and waving at every buggy that passed.

DE: Unser Fazit: Würden wir Kuramathi für Familien empfehlen?

Unbedingt! Egal ob erster Familienurlaub oder routinierte Reise-Familie – Kuramathi schafft diesen seltenen Mix aus Luxus und Lockerheit. Es ist entspannt, aber nie langweilig. Hochwertig, aber nie steif. Und vor allem: ein Ort, an dem man als Familie wirklich zur Ruhe kommen und Zeit miteinander genießen kann – mitten in der Natur und ganz ohne Hektik.

Unsere Babymoon-Erinnerungen werden wir immer im Herzen tragen – aber dieser Trip mit Teo hat uns noch mal auf eine ganz neue Art verzaubert. Sein Lachen beim Planschen, das Zeigen auf Fische, das Winken bei jeder Buggy-Fahrt… diese Erinnerungen sind unbezahlbar.
